Profile

Dr. Anthony Daniels is an ocular oncologist and is a member of the Vanderbilt Eye Institute and of the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. He graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University and subsequently received a Master's degree in public health policy from the London School of Economics. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, he completed an internship at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and both his ophthalmology residency as well as a retina surgery fellowship at Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary. He subsequently pursued additional tumor training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and at the Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Daniels specializes in intraocular cancers in adults and children, including melanoma, retinoblastoma, ocular metastases and leukemia/lymphoma. He also specializes in benign tumors inside the eye that can threaten vision, including retinal capillary hemangiomas that can be associated with von Hippel-Lindau syndrome, hamartomas, osteomas, and others. In addition, he treats side effects associated with radiation therapy to the eye.

He has been nationally recognized for his research, which focuses on minimizing complications associated with eye cancer treatment and in understanding and preventing the spread of cancer cells from the eye to the rest of the body. Dr. Daniels was awarded the Ronald G. Michels Award, given to the top retina fellows in the country, as well as the Ronald Margherio Research Award from the Retina Society. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology. He has authored an ophthalmology textbook, as well as more than 20 peer reviewed papers and book chapters, and has received more than a dozen research awards.
