Meet the Research Advocates

Research advocates at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center support our research efforts in many ways and for many reasons. Our advocates are cancer survivors, caregivers, and community members who are committed to making a difference.

Laura Nasca

Laura Nasca

Laura was diagnosed with stage 2B invasive ductal carcinoma in her left breast in 2021 and began treatment on November 9, 2021—her youngest daughter’s third birthday. For three years prior, Laura had missed her mammograms after being advised that pregnancy and breastfeeding made them impossible. Now, as a breast cancer survivor after chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, radiation, and DIEP surgery, Laura advocates for preventive care at every stage of life, encouraging self-exams and early detection through mammograms or ultrasounds.

She has embraced her role on the VICC Breast SPORE with gratitude despite never imagining herself among a group of breast cancer survivors. Laura shares her journey to inspire others to get tested and to remind physicians and researchers of the importance of their work, that there are personal stories behind the diagnosis, and to fuel their dedication to discovering life-saving treatments for people like her. Throughout her journey, Laura modeled the strength of surviving—with a smile—and showed others that there is hope on the other side of breast cancer.

In addition to her research advocacy work with VICC, Laura is a former participant and current advocate for Survivor Fitness, Feel for Your Life, and the Karen Wellington Foundation.
