My research applies human factors engineering methods and principles to improve the design of health information technology (HIT) to better support clinicians and patients, and to enhance patient safety and care quality. My research largely focuses on how to support clinical decision-making through the integration of advanced technologies, such as those based on machine learning and artificial intelligence, into clinical workflow. My work also focuses on supporting teamwork in healthcare, not just between clinicians but between the entire healthcare team – clinicians, patients, families, and caregivers. I developed a conceptual model of workflow integration to improve HIT design and implementation and continue to focus on additional methods and approaches for improving the deployment and use of HIT.
